Have you ever wondered what allows people to live a life they truly want? What if I told you that much of what we achieve actually comes down to how our thoughts govern our actions, with strategy only playing a very small part.
How often do we doubt ourselves when the voice in our head is telling us that we can’t do something because we’re not good enough or smart enough? How we respond to such thoughts can make all the difference between where we are now and where we want to be.
Mastering a mindset for success isn’t always easy, but it is possible. Here are five steps that can help you:
Understand what success means to you
To achieve your vision of success, you must first understand what success means to you, not your friends, spouse, in-laws or your neighbours – what it means to you! Each and every one of us is unique, so driving a $400,000 sports car might mean something to your colleagues but not necessarily anything to you. It’s important to be authentic here because there is nothing worse than striving for something that doesn’t align with who you are, and what you really want from life.
Identify how your thoughts have determined the life you live today
We are all a product of our environment and that includes the way we think. Take a look at all of the things that you would consider to be achievements in your life to date and examine your thought processes that led to the result. Chances are, you were determined to do something and didn’t allow negative reasoning to dictate the outcome. Now what if you applied the same thought structure to every aspect of your life while turning the dream dial up a few notches, what would your life look like then? You can never outperform your current results unless you shift your mindset in a way that will better influence your actions.
Don’t be afraid to dream big and take big steps
Though some of our situations may not be ideal in the long term, it is natural for human beings to resist change, especially when we’re in a place that feels somewhat comfortable. This is why we tend to set goals that we tell ourselves are “realistic” and take small steps to easily achieve them when taking big steps towards a dream could very well land us in a place of better health and prosperity. It’s hard to imagine what the world would look like if inventors and entrepreneurs only dreamt of things or set goals that were easy to attain.
Implement a growth mindset
It feels good to reach a goal but moreover there is always a feeling of what next? From my many years of consulting some of the largest companies in the technology and mining sectors, not once did they reach a target and decide that was the end. We are creatures of purpose and we live our lives in much the same way. It is when we come to the end of something that we can sometimes feel lost but by adopting a growth mindset, we open ourselves up to continuously finding new ways to improve our outcomes without questioning the direction it will take us.
Stick with it
It’s very easy to fall back into old thinking patterns, especially when our environment plays an important role in how we think and act. You may have friends or family for example, that choose to live their lives in a way they consider to be safe, and without ever taking any risks. Perhaps they remind you of a bad decision that you made in the past but are unaware of how you grew from that situation and took it as a learning experience which led to a successful outcome that you enjoy today. Unfavourable situations sometimes arise but it is how we choose to respond, and act that makes all the difference.
